3 Simple Rules to improve your layout composition

Hello on Tuesday! It's Kasia here today and I thought that instead of showing you a step by step tutorial I'll share with you some tricks which I've learnt about the composition and which are very helpful when I create a layout from scratch, without any sketch.

My boyfriend turned 30 few days ago so I knew from the beginning which photo I want to use. I picked some Birthday Cake products (Snip'em tags, Labels, Cards and File ACT) and started working on my layout. Below you can see examples of 3 composition rules which I decided to apply.

The rule of third First thing to consider is placement of the photograph. If you want your picture to draw most of the attention try to apply on your page the rule of third. Imagine 2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines which cut your page into 9 even parts and try to place a photograph on one of their intersections- thanks to that your picture will draw attention and more interest.

From left to right We are all used to reading and looking at things from left to right, so remember about it when you place your title and elements which you wish to have logical flow on your page. I've noticed that if I follow this ''left to right'' rule even the most scattered and broken title is easily readible!

Triangle My last trick for today is about embellishments and the way you place them on the page. They play a very important role in your layouts composition and one of the basic ways to place them in pleasing way is to imagine a triangle going around the photograph or main element of your page and lay the embellishments on its corners. This visual triangle will help you bring more attention to the photo and it'll balance the page nicely. Tags, stamps, die cuts elements- they are all perfect for it!

Here are some extra details of my layout:

I hope you fill inspired to spice up your composition next time when you create the layout! Of course, these rules are totally flexible and experimenting with them is actually lots of fun! Do you have any tips on building your layouts composition? If yes, share with us!

I absolutely love everything about this layout, except for one tiny thing. My eye keeps drifting to the sticker, or tag, on his face. It is visually distracting. Other than that it is wonderful. love all those design tips. Great layout.

hey Loraine, it's actually photographs fault :) the tag is attached to the cake, not the layout, but I agree photo would be better if it was slightly on the side!
Thanks for your feedback and all the comments!
