Technique Tuesday | Pocket Page Styling

Hi everyone! Suz back with you today to share some techniques/ideas that I used to create my pocket life pages for the past week. I have been documenting in "pocket page" style for six years now I believe. I still love this way of creating and still love that it an evolving craft as are my pages and style.

I started out my layout by using the fabulous January kit (a few are remaining here while they last!) along with several tags from the Love Note Collection,  and a few 4x6 patterned papers I had on hand at the heart of my 2 page layout.

For my week title, I used this pocket card from the Jan. kit (below). I took my little Fiskars cutter and trimmed around the title work as shown.
Then I cut around the inside of the printed border outline of the card to leave this remainder of the 4x6 card:
I placed the photo behind the cutout frame and then adhered the title work over the top of my photo as shown, then sewed a rectangle around it.
Stitching around it adds a little bit more texture, dimension, and interest I think.

Below I layered a Polaroid type frame from the kit along with a Love Note journaling tag and stapled them together with some Cloud 9 "Lovely" patterned paper.
Then I placed some hidden journaling below it. This is helpful when I want my layout to not get too visually cluttered with my handwritten journaling.

Below I took a scanned image of a brush script painting sample I did for an online class and printed it out onto photo paper and then stitched around it with my sewing machine. A fun way to add a little bit of my other hobbies/activities onto the pages of my album!
I made a confetti pocket by stapling the Love Note circle tags back to back and then added some punched hearts and sequins and sewed the pocket closed at the top. Then I added the "Status Update" rub on right over my photo with some vintage typewriter journaling onto the negative space of my photo of my beloved Rudy. The "happy" heart I stamped onto some white card stock and trimmed and then stapled directly to my photo.

This is the front of an insert I added (as I often do because our weekends often have a bulk of our activities).

I trimmed one end of a Love Note Phrases tag ("at the cabin") to a triangular endpoint to help repeat the arrow/banner flow to the card and to guide the eyes over to the next section of the layout. And here too, I typed right onto the negative space of my photo. I also placed "The Life" tag strategically, to cover up our charcoal grill and garbage can that happened to be a visual distraction to the story I wanted to tell/show about new gutters that were added to our cabin.

Here are a few other places I have sewn to the journaling cards to add a bit more interest to my layout.

And below I stitched around the arrow "and so it begins" to draw more attention to my title work on the card.

And here is the week at a glance (without the weekend insert). Click on any image to view larger.

I really loved the cohesiveness of this month's kit and how well the Love Note tags complemented it. Thanks for stopping by today! Please leave comments, questions or link ups (as to how you have used your January kit in the comment section below.)

And if the Valentine's Day/President's Day weekend kept you away from your online shopping experience and you haven't already purchased a Feb kit, there are a few kits remaining (while supplies last) here:
